American contractor texted friends hours before death in Saudi Arabia

WASHINGTON — A representative of an Israeli defense major has been killed in Saudi Arabia.

The representative, identified as Christopher Cramer, was found dead outside his hotel in the Saudi port of Tabouk on Jan. 30. The 50-year-old Cramer was said to have worked for Elbit’s subsidiary in the United States, Kollsman.

“We have been notified from Kollsman, a subsidiary of Elbit Systems in America, that Chris Cramer died during a work trip,” Elbit said on Feb. 1. “The death has come under review by the State Department.”

The notice confirmed reports that Elbit, through its foreign subsidiaries, was involved in defense projects in the Gulf Cooperation Council. Cramer was said to have been sent to Saudi Arabia to fix the U.S.-origin TOW wire-guided heavy anti-tank missile system.

Saudi authorities said Cramer jumped from his third-floor window at the Sahara Makarim Hotel. But his family said Cramer was killed by those linked to Saudi arms dealers.

“The problem was with the customer,” family attorney Noah Mandell told the U.S. FoxNews. “The missile system was already sold to the Saudi company and they were complaining that it wasn’t working. He was basically sent to see if he could prove that they were firing it incorrectly.”

Family members said Cramer, who lives in the U.S. state of New Hampshire, determined that the TOW was sabotaged. They showed text messages by Cramer that the Saudis were preparing to offer upgrades for the 1970s-era missile. In July 2010, prime contractor Raytheon won an award to supply $55 million worth of TOW missiles to Saudi Arabia.

“They want to check out firing some of the new TOW-2A RF link aeros and some extended range TOW,” Cramer said in a text message obtained by Fox News. “I’ll be shooting them till Thursday [Jan. 29] and if they like the performance of our stuff, we’re gonna get an order for a ton of upgrades.”

Hours before his death, Cramer sent text messages to his friends urging them to contact the State Department in Washington. One message indicated that Cramer had been threatened with his life.

“I think something bad is going to happen to me tonight,” Cramer said. “Please contact State Dept. ASAP. Bad things were said.”

This marked the latest attack in Saudi Arabia of Westerners, including those working for defense companies. Islamic State of Iraq and Levant has warned Saudi Arabia of being the next target in the jihadist campaign.

For its part, Elbit refused to confirm the role of Kollsman in Saudi Arabia. Elbit said Cramer worked for Kollsman, based in New Hampshire, for 12 years.

“We are not in a position to disclose further details regarding the project he was working on, but it involves a legacy Kollsman product that does not include any Israeli technologies,” Elbit said.
