The Archbishop of Canterbury yesterday warned supporters of women bishops they are ‘looking into the abyss’
The Archbishop of Canterbury yesterday warned supporters of women bishops that they are ‘looking into the abyss’.
Dr Rowan Williams said that they must face years of delay if they do not accept a compromise deal on promoting women to the leadership ranks of the Church of England which is on offer this weekend.
A failure to vote for the deal at the meeting of the General Synod in York could mean that the women’s lobby could have to wait 10 years for another chance to secure the right for women to become bishops.
Many supporters of women bishops say they will vote against the planned law to permit the promotion of women because it will allow parishes to choose to be supervised by male bishops who do not recognise the authority of women priests.
Dr Williams told clergy and bishops in advance of the Synod meeting that if the law was rejected, there will be no further chance to vote on a rejigged version until a new Synod is elected by churches in 2015.
Then, the legislations that has been carefully prepared over the past five years will need to be drawn up again from the beginning of the process before it can come back to the Church’s parliament for approval.
The delay could mean that instead of the consecration of the first woman as a bishop in 2014, supporters of women and women hoping for promotion would have to wait into the next decade.
The Archbishop said: ‘It is important that we look into the abyss.
‘Like the majority of members of the Synod, and the majority of members of the Church of England, I am very firmly of the view that we need to proceed as speedily as we can to resolve this question because I, like most of you, long to see women bishops in the Church of England.’

Dr Williams added: ‘I also long for there to be the kind of provision for those who continue to have theological reservations on this subject, for their position to be secured in such a way that they can feel grateful for the outcome as others do.’
The legislation on women bishops has been in doubt since May, when Dr Williams and senior colleagues strengthened the safeguards for traditionalist churchgoers who will not accept women bishops.
The arguments of the conservatives are the same they used to try to block the recognition of women priests 20 years ago.
Anglo-Catholics say there is no precedent church tradition for the promotion of women, and they believe women bishops will get in the way of eventual reunion with the Roman Catholic Church.

Evangelicals in the CofE say there is no authority in the Bible for women to lead the Church.
Supporters of women bishops have been calling for the main debate on Monday to be adjourned and a vote postponed.
They say the compromise would mean traditionalist dioceses could establish a separate class of bishops ‘untainted’ by ever having ordained a woman priest.
One General Synod lay member, Suffolk church member Tim Allen, said: ‘To be fair, the bishops did this not as mere Luddites but as well-intentioned but clumsy and short-sighted engineers seeking to make an adjustment to secure the passage of the measure.’

Women are equally accepted both here on earth as well as in God’s sight. If some Anglicans find this impossible to accept then they need – sadly – to find another part of the Christian family in which to feel comfortable.

Religion is causing my son to believe its the starter of all things evil. He’s 12, and has started asking why we don’t just all forget religion as it causes all the wars and problems of today. Now we have someone saying the bibles wrong and women are not equal, not sure how to explain this do I decided to let him talk to his RE teacher, who keeps telling us he’s got a fantastically advanced mind!

Dale – it is disingenuous of you to quote one small passage of scripture to justify the position on women bishops. I suggest you read your Bible again and specifically look to the NT for Junia, Phoebe, Priscilla, Euodia, Syntyche, Lydia, Chloe , Nympha…… This comments Is too short to argue the case on each count, but you will find many texts by learned scholars that provide context and translation from Greek and Aramaic. I hope you will find a more balanced view through such study.

Men have great qualities, woman ALSO have great qualities. If the church stopped over powering woman and let them develop they would see this. In gods eyes we are all equal why not in church?

There is no logical reason to accept that women can be priests by oppose women bishops. The difficulty comes from the fact that people who don’t think women can be priests can choose not to have a woman priest, but it’s hard to make the same arrangement for bishops. In the normal course of affairs, your male priest in a no women priests parish could find himself required to show obedience to a woman bishop, which would hardly be acceptable to that parish.
The woolly compromise attempts to avoid that by creating a parallel arrangement for such no-women parishes, so that they can be comfortable with a hierarchy full of Y chromosomes. This isn’t anything new – it’s the obvious re-run of the women priest argument. The arguments are the same, the players are on the same sides, and we’ll probably end up with the same rather silly compromise.

Meanwhile the church wonders why it is sliding into a pit of irrelevance in the modern world. So, some don’t respect a woman bishop and yet the Queen is the head of the church and I’m pretty sure she is a woman! Are they therefore saying they don’t respect the Queen as the head of the church? The congregations are quite literally dying off and any “new blood” is utterly put off by the whole institution. In the next 20 maybe 30 years the CofE will cease to exist unless it drastically alters course to be more socially representative. It is 2012, not 1812!
