Argentina to woo Scotland over Malvinas

President Cristina Kirchner is reportedly considering to send a delegation of officials to Scotland in order to attend the celebration of the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn, marking the victory of Robert the Bruce over the English in 1314.

The Sun quoted the Argentine politician Carlos Kunkel, an ally of president, as saying, “We are analyzing the possibility of sending a delegation to the celebrations of the Scottish victory.” Adding, “Sending arms to the Malvinas Islands is the decadence of the English empire.”

It comes as the Scottish National Party (SNP) leader, Alex Salmond, has planned to hold the Scottish independence referendum during the festivity of Scotland’s remarking triumph over the English.

The war of words has intensified between Argentina and Britain over the disputed Malvinas islands, and Britain has considered the issue as an absolutely political no-go zone, insisting the islands would remain British for as long the islanders wish to be British.

Critics condemned Britain’s double standard policy, that on one hand it apparently supports the independence of the islanders but on the other hand has strongly opposed the Scottish independence from the United Kingdom, with Prime Minister David Cameron claiming earlier that he would fight with “head, heart and soul” to prevent the separation of Scotland.

Critics believe that Argentine government, that has received strong support from the nations in South America and Caribbean over sovereignty claim, is now seeking support from within the UK, and particularly Scotland, which is under constant pressure from London for planning to be an independent nation.

However, unconfirmed sources also disclosed that Salmond has also been considering making Scottish claim over the archipelago, as many of the people living on the islands are descended from Scottish settlers and that Britain named the islands as “Falklands” after Scot Anthony Cary, the 5th Viscount of Falkland.
