Hamid expressed that he hoped that the militaries of Bangladesh and China would “maintain the current positive momentum of cooperation and exchanges” in all areas and levels.

Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan, for his part, noted that the two countries had witnessed a healthy and stable development and exchanges in various fields since Bangladesh and China established diplomatic relations 41 years ago.

Chang added that China is willing to cooperate with relevant countries, including Bangladesh, to promote the belt Road Initiative as well as the Bangladesh – China – Myanmar Economic Corridor, to bring tangible development benefits to the people of the countries and advance regional peace and stability. Relations between Bangladesh and Myanmar have seen ups and downs, including armed conflict for decades.

Myanmar’s Rakhine state has significant off-shore gas resources and the region the one that is most rich in resources within the greater Mekong region.

Chang noted that cooperation between the militaries of Bangladesh and China has grown steadily and rapidly in recent years, with frequent high-level visits, continuously deepening “pragmatic cooperation and fruitful cooperation on personnel training”. e expressed hope that the two armies would earnestly implement the important consensus reached between leaders of the two countries and strengthen friendly cooperation to provide strong support and guarantee to bilateral relations.

One of the issues that have not been addressed in public, but one issue that may be of importance for trust building between Bangladesh and China is that Bangladeshi military intelligence is known for cooperating, on some levels, with the Al-Qaeda-linked HuJI, the infiltration of Rohigya refugee communities in Myanmar by HuJI operatives, and attempts to destabilize Myanmar’s Rakhine State. The support of the Al-Qaeda-linked HuJI by Bangladeshi military intelligence is a factor that potentially could aggravate China’s problems with militant Uighur insurgents in China’s Xinjiang province.

Chang and Hamid also discussed the situation in the South China Sea. Hamid noted that Bangladesh supports China’s position with regard to the disputes over South China Sea territories and that Bangladesh supports the notion that disputes should be resolved by direct negotiations between all of the concerned parties.
