Blasts target polio team in Pakistan

At least 12 people have been killed in three separate bomb attacks targeting a polio vaccination team in northwestern Pakistan.

The bombs went off in Lashora area of Jamroud Tehsil in Khyber Agency on Saturday.

More than ten other people were also injured in the bombings.

Reports say the fatalities included 11 paramilitary soldiers protecting the anti-polio team and a child.

Officials said two vehicles were also damaged.

No group has claimed responsibility for the deadly attacks.

Pakistan has suffered from violence against its health workers.

In recent months, a number of anti-polio workers have been killed in deadly attacks in the port city of Karachi as well as Bhakkar District of Punjab Province, and Charsadda area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

Pro-Taliban militants in Pakistan have ordered a ban on the polio vaccination campaign. They say the move could be a cover-up for US espionage activities in the country. There have also been rumors suggesting that the polio drops may cause infertility.

The militants say they will not allow the vaccination campaign to be conducted as long as the United States continues its assassination drone attacks in Pakistan.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Pakistan recorded 91 cases of polio in 2013, 58 up from the cases reported during the previous year.

The WHO says that Pakistan is the world’s “largest reservoir” of polio.
