British PM makes surprise Afghan visit

The Prime Minister landed on Wednesday morning at the military base of Camp Bastion, saying after touring the base that bringing all troops home by this deadline is “doable and deliverable”, the Daily Telegraph reported.

After talks with military chiefs at the base in Helmand Province, Cameron insisted that Afghanistan will soon be ready to take control of its own security.

He is under pressure to speed up the withdrawal of British troops from Afghanistan by a year, which could save around £3 billion.
However, he claimed pulling out is “not about the money” but making sure Afghan forces are capable.

The prime minister said today’s visit made him “confident” the Afghan army and police will be able to take over control from British forces before the 2014 deadline.

“We are seeing the Afghan army, the Afghan police step up to take control of their own country, which means that we’ll be able to take our forces home,” he said. That’s what we want to do.”

During meetings with military chiefs, he was briefed about a slight upsurge in violence as British and U.S. troops begin handing over control to the Afghan army.
