Buying fake Viagra online ‘risky’

AUSSIE men who bypass doctors and buy drugs online for erectile dysfunction risk poisoning themselves, a leading urologist has warned.

The Urological Society of Australia says new research shows counterfeit versions of Viagra and Cialis sold online pose dangerous health risks and are likely a waste of money.

The research was presented at the American Urological Associations annual meeting in San Francisco in early June. Researchers from Korea examined 19 counterfeit versions comparing them to the legitimate prescription and the study found 18 out of the 19 contained dodgy doses, society president David Malouf said.

The research also found 58 per cent of counterfeits had too much active ingredient, while 37 per cent contained none.

The drugs bought from online dealers are unregulated, Dr Malouf said.

“Counterfeit ones are essentially made in backyard chemists,” he said.

“Some of them were tainted with other compounds that should not be there including heavy metals such as lead and mercury.

“If there’s no active ingredient you’re wasting your money.”

He said the only safe option was to talk to a family doctor and get a real prescription filled by a proper chemist.

“Unfortunately, the potential embarrassment of discussing erectile dysfunction with a doctor is often what drives people to purchase online, yet men need to know that their doctors are very familiar with the condition and are the only ones fully qualified to diagnose and treat the problem,” Dr Malouf said.

“These drugs do have side effects, if you’ve got the wrong dose… the potential for side effects is much greater,” he said.

Dr Malouf said seeking medical advice would ensure men do not accidentally mix medications with dangerous consequences. He said mixing Viagra drugs with nitrate-heart medication could cause a dramatic drop in blood pressure and cardiac problems.

“If a man went to the internet to order his Viagra and was not aware of the side effects (of mixing other medications) he could end up in all sorts of trouble,” he said.

Dr Malouf said men who don’t consult their doctors about erectile dysfunction also ran the risk of not being diagnosed with other serious health issues.

“It’s not uncommon for erectile dysfunction to actually be an indicator of other health risks, such as metabolic syndrome or heart disease,” he said.
