Cyprus seeks European Union bailout

The country on Monday informed European authorities of its decision to submit to euro member states a request for financial assistance, according to a statement by the country’s European Union embassy in Brussels.

Government spokesman, Stefanos Stefanou, said the amount Cyprus would ask from the European bailout fund would be subject to negotiations in the coming days.

Cyprus is the fifth eurozone government to request bailout assistance from the EU’s rescue funds.

The country will now join Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain which have already asked for the EU rescue program.

Meanwhile, Nicosia also seems likely to ask Russia to lend it 3-5 billion euros.

The support from the eurozone, which could be along the same lines as those used for a rescue for Spanish banks, also being formulated on Monday, could also be 3-5 billion euros.

Fitch credit ratings agency downgraded debt issued by Cyprus from “BBB minus” to the speculative status of “BB plus” on Monday. Standard Poor’s had done so in January and Moody’s on June 13.
