The Egyptian Civil Aviation Ministry, at 8:00 a.m. local time, issued a statement, reporting that the EgyptAir Airbus on flight MS181 with 55 passengers and 5 crew on board went missing 30 minutes after its departure from Borg Al-Arab International Airport.

The plane was hijacked by a man who allegedly is wearing an explosive belt. After arrival in Cyprus negotiations resulted in the release of women and children who were on the hijacked plane. The Egyptian Youm7 and The Cairo Post report that 30 Egyptians, 10 U.S. Americans and 8 British citizens were among the 55 passengers.

Further negotiations resulted in the release of further passengers with the exception of 5 foreigner and the crew. Egyptian State TV identified the hijacker as Ibrahim Samaha. At about 9:50 a.m. Samaha reportedly demanded that the plane be flown to Turkey, which the pilot rejected saying that the plane had not enough fuel for the flight. Egypt’s President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi and his Cypriot counterpart Nicos Anastasiades are reportedly communicating about the development to solve the situation.

The hijacking came about five months after terrorists linked to the self-proclaimed Islamic State brought down a Russian airliner on flight KGL9268 from Sharm El-Sheikh to St Petersburg in Egypt’s North Sinai province. The incident has had a devastating impact on Egypt’s tourism industry. The hijacker’s proposed destination, Turkey, has since the eruption of the wars in Libya and Syria in 2011 been a hotbed of and safe haven for Al-Qaeda, Muslim Brotherhood and Islamic State linked terrorists and hijacked mercenaries.

Samaha reportedly requested asylum in Cyprus as he became aware the plane would not be flown to Turkey. Some reports that he hijacked the plane because he wanted to see his estranged wife in Cyprus could not yet be confirmed. Some analysts speculate that it is unlikely that he could have brought an explosives belt on board. Egypt significantly increased security after the KGL9268 tragedy in October.
