Egypt’s opposition nixes unity talks

During a Monday speech, President Morsi made the call saying that “I call upon everyone … for real lining up… the nation forces us to be one line,” adding that “I will not give up calling for a comprehensive national reconciliation.”

On Tuesday, Khaled Dawoud, the spokesman of the National Salvation Front, issued a statement saying that ahead of the nationwide protests “Such a call is simply lip service on Morsi’s part…It is rather too late.”

Egyptians planned to stage nationwide demonstrations for and against President Morsi on the anniversary of his taking office on June 30th.

An opposition movement, Rebel, which is an organizer of the anti-Morsi protest, has managed to collect over 7 million signatures in favor of early elections.

Earlier this week another Egyptian opposition party Wafd issued a statement saying that “The president has lost his legitimacy. One year has passed under his rule and no achievement has been made. The country’s political and economic conditions are getting worse day after day. We will take to the streets on June 30th with the peaceful demand which is the downfall of the regime.”

Several opposition movements including the National Salvation Front and April 6 Youth Movement have accused the president of failing to abide by the goals of the 2011 revolution and pledged to join the protests.

Meanwhile, Morsi has dismissed the call for early elections as absurd and unconstitutional, but asserted the right of his opponents to peacefully demonstrate and voice their opinions.

Islamic parties, on the other hand, have strongly condemned the calls for anti-Morsi protests.

Egyptians launched a revolution against the pro-Israeli regime in January 2011, which eventually brought an end to the 30-year dictatorship of former President Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.
