Recep Tayyip Erdogan has pointed out that Israel has not fulfilled the promise made when it offered a formal apology to his country for the 2010 attack on the Freedom Flotilla.
Speaking to journalists, Turkey’s prime minister said that reports issued by international observers in Palestine indicate that Israel has broken the promises it made regarding the Gaza Strip. He referred specifically to UN officials who say that the Israeli army continues to bombard some sites in the territory.
Mr Erdogan added that it is impossible to allow the Israeli embassy in Ankara to reopen before the Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip has been lifted fully. He alluded to his government’s insistence on this condition.
The Israeli delegation assigned to negotiate the amount of compensation for the families of the victims of the flotilla attack was due to arrive in Turkey earlier this week, said the prime minister. However, it has been postponed for a week because his deputy, who looks after this portfolio, was with Erdogan on a tour to Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia.
