Europe, Canada to host Iran’s Mezrab

Led by Iranian Setar virtuoso Hamid Motebassem, the ensemble will perform in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and several European cities.

“The concerts have been organized with a new repertoire and in two parts,” ISNA quoted Motebassem as saying.

The ensemble will present pieces inspired by poems of renowned contemporary Iranian poets such as Mehdi Akhavan-Sales and Mohammad-Reza Shafiei Kadkani.

The pieces are composed by Pejman Zahedian, Ramin Azimian and Hamid Motebassem.

Arman Sigarchi (Barbat), Naghmeh Farahmand (percussion), Ramin Azimian (Tar) and Pejman Zahedian (Setar) will accompany Motebassem (Tar and Setar).

The ‘Mezrab’ ensemble was established by Hamid Motebassem, who also founded the famous ‘Dastan’ ensemble in 1991.

A graduate from Tehran School of Art and the Conservatory of Persian Music, Motebassem learnt music from Iranian masters Ali Motebassem, Hossein Alizade and Mohammad-Reza Lotfi.

He is the founder of the Society of Tar and Setar and has organized annual seminars dedicated to the two instruments since 1994.

Motebassem has also collaborated with many Iranian composers and held concerts in many prestigious events such as Fes festival in Morocco, World Festival of Sacred Music the Americas in Los Angeles, Stimmen festival in Lorrach and the First UK annual Festival in London.
