Five die in Philippines volcano eruption

Mayon volcano, which is located 330km (206 miles) southeast of the capital Manila, spewed huge rocks and ash on Tuesday.

Rescue teams and helicopters have been dispatched to the scene of the incident to rescue mountaineers who were trapped or injured in sudden eruption.

“Five killed and seven are injured, that is the latest report,” National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council chief Eduardo del Rosario said on Tuesday.

“We do not have the identity of those killed or injured, whether they are foreigners or locals” the official added.

Reports say there have been tourists from Germany and Austria among the casualties.

In December 2009, a volcano ejection forced thousands of residents to leave their homes and take cover in temporary shelters in the region.

In 1814, more than 1,200 people lost their lives when lava flows buried the town of Cagsawa.
