Former media official released from jail

IRNA — Former Iranian media official Issa Saharkhiz has been released from jail, Director of Tehran Province’s Prisons Mostafa Mohebbi announced.

Speaking to IRNA, Mohebbi said that Saharkhiz was released on Tuesday after finishing his term in prison.

Saharkhiz, whose file is known as Iran’s first file of political crime, is charged with insulting one of the heads of the three branches of government.

Iran’s Parliament passed political crime bill last year which was then approved by the Guardian Council and the president.

Clause (2) of Article A of this legislation says insulting the heads of the three branches of government is regarded as political crime and has to be investigated at a criminal court in front of the jury.

Saharkhiz’s file was the first political file after political crime bill was passed. Earlier, for the lack of a definition of political crime, such crimes were dealt with at Islamic Revolution courts.
