French health workers protest in Paris

Organizers of the rally said about 8,000 people participated in the protest in the capital, Paris, on Saturday.

“Already now at the emergency ward, patients have to wait nine to twelve hours and they are closing down our hospitals in central Paris to property agencies,” said Morgan Saker, one of the protesters.

The demonstrators argued that dozens of hospitals and clinics are being shut down across the country and not just in big cities as a result of the government’s austerity policies.

At the rally, labor unions said the cuts, estimated at three billion euros, will ultimately affect the country’s economic health.

However, French authorities say the financial cuts in the health care sector are necessary to save the country’s economy.

France fell back into recession on May 15, as its gross domestic product dropped 0.2 percent in the first quarter of 2013.

In April, the country’s unemployment hit a record high of 3.26 million people without work, marking the 24th consecutive monthly rise.
