Greek PM to hold meeting on ERT closure

Samaras’ office said on Thursday that the meeting, which was demanded by the prime minister’s junior coalition partners, would be held at 11 a.m. Monday.

The announcement came as Greece’s major unions took part in the 24-hour work stoppage, which began at midnight on Wednesday.

The strike comes after the broadcaster’s television and radio stations were abruptly taken off air late on June 11. The move, which is part of the Greek government’s unpopular austerity measures, left ERT’s nearly 2,700 staff suspended.

On Tuesday, Samaras’ government took the broadcaster’s television and radio stations off the air, claiming it had become a “haven of public waste.”

Thousands of people also gathered outside ERT headquarters in Athens in protest against the government’s decision to shut down the media outlet.

ERT journalists also refused to leave the broadcaster’s headquarters and continued their programs live on the Internet into Wednesday.

ERT began broadcasting in 1938, running three domestic TV channels, four national radio stations, as well as regional radio stations and an external service, Voice of Greece.

In April, the Greek parliament passed a bill to cut 15,000 state jobs by the end of 2014. The law was a condition for debt-stricken Greece to receive rescue loans from its European partners and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

On Monday, the troika delegation from the European Commission, the IMF and the European Central Bank (ECB) went to Athens to hold fresh round of talks with the Greek government.

Greece has been at the epicenter of the eurozone debt crisis and is experiencing its sixth year of recession, while harsh austerity measures have left tens of thousands of people without jobs.
