Guantánamo prisoner David Hicks to profit from memoir

His case received widespread publicity in Australia and led to growing
criticisms of the Howard government, which was accused of failing to do
enough to ensure he was tried or released.

The DPP said in a statement that Mr Hicks had sought to challenge the nature
of his plea in the US, where he admitted that the evidence proved the case
against him without admitting to the actual offences. Such a plea – known as
an Alford plea – does not exist in Australia.

“After careful consideration of all matters, including the advice
received, I reached the view that this Office was not in a position to
discharge the onus placed upon it to satisfy the court that the admissions
should be relied upon and decided that these proceedings should not continue,”
the statement said.
