‘Gunmen kill policeman in Egypt Sinai’

An official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said on Sunday, “Gunmen killed Colonel Mohammed al-Sayed Abu Shaqra from the anti-terrorism police in an attack in the city of al-Arish, (the capital of the North Sinai governorate).”

Several militant attacks have been targeting Egyptian security personnel and civilians in operations, especially in the Sinai Peninsula, which borders the Occupied Palestinian Territories and the besieged Gaza Strip.

The outbreak of violence in the Sinai region has prompted the Egyptian government to deploy hundreds of troops in the region.

In May, seven Egyptian security officers, three from the police and four from the military, who were abducted by militants in North Sinai’s Green Valley some 20 kilometers away from el-Arish, were released.

According to the country’s Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim, the officers were kidnapped by men armed with machineguns and anti-aircraft missiles, who were demanding the release of imprisoned militants.

In August 2012, at least 15 Egyptian policemen were killed in an assault on a police station at the border between Egypt and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. It was the deadliest incident in Sinai in decades.

In response, Cairo launched an offensive against terrorists in Sinai, sending thousands of troops backed by tanks and heavy equipment into the region.
