Health of journalist hunger striker in Israeli jails at risk

Days of Palestine, West Bank –Health conditions of Palestinian journalists on hunger strike in Israeli jails for 49 days at risk, wife said on Monday.

Mohammed al-Qeq is protesting Israeli six-month prison sentence under what is commonly known in the Israeli prisons the illegal administrative detention.

“Al-Qeq is in critical condition after 48 days on hunger strike and his life is at risk,” said Issa Qaraqe, the Palestinian Authority minister of prisoner affairs.

Israeli prison service said that Al-Qeq is being monitored in an Israeli hospital, but refused to comment on his condition. His wife, Fayhaa al-Qeq, said the Israeli occupation “accused him of inciting violence.”

Al-Qeq, 33, works as a correspondent for the Saudi channel Al-Majd and also appears as an analyst on other TV channels.

He had been arrested several times by the Israeli occupation over anti-occupation activities he was involved in since he was a students.

Palestinian prisoners have used hunger strikes before to draw attention to their detention without trial or charges. Al-Qeq is the first journalist to do so.
