Huge funeral procession held in Gaza

Ahmed Nassir was killed in a firefight with Israeli forces in the south of the Gaza Strip on Friday, Reuters reported.

The 20-year-old Palestinian was buried in the town of Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip on Saturday.

Witnesses say an Israeli soldier was also slain in the firefight, which occurred close to the Egyptian border.

The Israeli Army claimed that Nasser cut through the border fence east of the town of Khan Yunis and opened fire on Israeli troops, who then shot back.

Following the incident, Israeli forces set farmlands in the area on fire. According to Palestinian sources, three hectares of wheat fields were burned.

They also fired a missile, which killed one more Palestinian and wounded two others in the besieged enclave.

The Israeli military frequently bombs the Gaza Strip, saying the actions are being conducted for defensive purposes. However, disproportionate force is always used, in violation of international law, and civilians are often killed or injured.

Gaza has been blockaded since 2007, which is a situation that has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.
