However, Iranian officials have yet to comment on the newly announced negotiations in Vienna.
The seasonal meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, which commenced Monday at the agency headquarters in Vienna, will continue through the end of the current week with Iran topping the agenda.
The latest Amano report on Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities was released 10 days ago and forwarded to members of the IAEA Board of Governors.
In the report, Amano points out that the agency confirms lack of any diversion in Iran’s nuclear energy activities, which are closely monitored by IAEA inspectors.
Amano announced on May 22 that Iran and the nuclear agency had made a decision to reach an agreement aimed at resolving issues related to the country’s nuclear energy program.
“A decision was made by me and [Iran’s top nuclear negotiator] Mr. [Saeed] Jalili to reach an agreement on the structured approach,” Yukiya Amano said in Vienna on May 22 after returning from his latest visit to Iran.
“At this stage, I can say it will be signed quite soon, but I cannot say how soon it will be,” he added, describing the agreement as an “important development.”
The UN nuclear agency chief, accompanied by the IAEA Deputy Director General for Safeguards Herman Nackaerts and the agency’s Assistant Director General for Policy Rafael Mariano Grossi, arrived in Tehran on May 21 for talks with senior Iranian officials.
“We had very good talks with [Yukiya] Amano today and, God willing, we will have good cooperation in the future,” Jalili said after his May meeting with Amano.
