Indonesia Rejects Seoul’s Call for a more “Firm Stance” about North Korean Tests

nsnbc : Indonesia rejected a call from the South Korean Ambassador to Jakarta who said that the country should take a more firm stance with regard to North Korean missile and nuclear tests and underpinned that Indonesia is always ready to mediate between the North and the South.

Korea_kaesong_NEO_2015South Korea’s ambassador to Indonesia, Tae-Young Cho asked Indonesia to be more firm and active to stop North Korea’s (DPRK) tests and launches of ballistic missiles. The ambassador also called on Indonesia to take a more firm stance on the DPRK’s nuclear program and nuclear weapons development.

Arrmanatha Nasir, the spokesperson of Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded to Ambassador Tae-Young Cho’s statements, saying that Indonesia is always ready to act as mediator between North and South Korea and help them reconcile. Arrmanatha Nasir added that Indonesia’s efforts towards a Korean reconciliation were more keen than those of most countries.

The diplomatic exchange between Seoul and Jakarta comes as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) announced that it would conduct new trials in May 2016. Pyongyang’s development of ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons as well as its launch of a satellite has drawn sharp international criticism. However, Pyongyang aims at self-reliance, which includes independence from having to rely on either a Russian or a Chinese “nuclear umbrella”, like Seoul relies on the United States.

DPRK_Long Range Rocket_Korea_Feb 2016Pyongyang aims, despite all rhetoric, on friendly relations with its neighbors and considers the involvement of superpowers as obstructing, rather than as promoting reconciliation. Pyongyang’s ballistic missile program is, despite sanctions, as legal as its space program and the launch of satellites.

Pyongyang would, for example, benefit greatly from satellites that could help it better plan and regulate its agricultural sector. Moreover, most actually non-partisan analysts agree that the chances for a peaceful reconciliation increase when the divided country’s military capacities, their technological capacities, and not least their economies are closer to being on par.

Nasir added that Indonesia had asked North Korea to restrain itself from provocative action that might increase tensions in the region while Jakarta aims at maintaining and increasing bilateral relations with both Seoul and Pyongyang. Nasir stressed that Indonesia had made many more efforts in that regard than other countries.

Jakarta has, in other words, rejected the calls from Ambassador Cho who addressed the media and said that every country that enjoys good relations with North Korea could influence Pyongyang to stop its nuclear tests. Ironically, it is the dichotomy between the role which the permanent UN security Council members China, Russia and USA should play, and the roles they actually are playing, including their geopolitical chess games, that forces Pyongyang to rely on developing its own nuclear capabilities.
