Iran condemns bomb attacks in Iraq

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry spokesman, Ramin Mehmanparast noted that the bomb attacks in Baghdad and several other Iraqi cities were in continuation of certain parties’ enmity which have targeted independence, peace, stability, and peace in Iraq.

“The Islamic Republic voices its all-out support for the government of Iraq [in its effort] to adopt suitable mechanisms for preventing such terrorist and inhuman acts,” he added.

“We are sure that Iraqi officials and people are able to eradicate such violent and terrorist measures and establish stability and security [in Iraq] and can properly defend their independence and sovereignty in the face of enemies’ plots,” Mehmanparast said.

On Tuesday, at least, 50 people were killed and over 230 others injured in bomb explosions in several Iraqi cities and towns ahead of next week’s Arab League summit in the capital Baghdad.

The spate of violence, which rocked several Iraqi towns and cities spanning the southern holy city of Karbala and the northern oil-rich city of Kirkuk between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., was the deadliest incident in Iraq in nearly a month.

In Karbala, two roadside bomb blasts ripped through the holy Shia city, killing over a dozen people, including at least six Iranian pilgrims.

Meanwhile, a car bomb detonated in a parking lot in front of the foreign ministry in Baghdad’s heavily-fortified Green Zone.

Elsewhere in the central town of Hilla, a car bomb explosion claimed the lives of two people and wounded 31 others.

Explosions also rocked Baiji, Samarra, Tuz Khurmato, Daquq and Dhuluiya, all north of Baghdad, Ramadi in the west, and Latifiya and Mahmudiya in the south.

Police found and defused bombs in the western city of Falluja as well as the northeastern city of Baquba.

The attacks come a day after the Iraqis marked the ninth anniversary of the US-led invasion of their country, and ahead of the preparations for the March 27-29 Arab League summit in Baghdad.
