Iran set to renovate Syrian power plants

Iran’s Safa Nicu Sepahan Company will renovate the dams of al-Furat and al-Baath, with the estimated costs of EUR 14.8 million and EUR 767,000, IRNA reported.

Syria’s Minister of Irrigation George Malki Soumi has expressed hope for a speedy renovation of the hydroelectric power stations and the expansion of the country’s electricity generation capacity.

Soumi also ordered pertinent organizations to cooperate with the Iranian company in renovating the power plants.

Constructed on the Euphrates River, al-Furat and al-Baath power stations have the potential electricity generation capacities of 800 and 75 megawatts respectively.

On Sunday, an Iranian energy official said that the Islamic Republic will start exporting 50 megawatts of electricity to Lebanon and Syria as of next week.

Abdolhamid Farzam, an official with the Iranian Energy Ministry, said that electricity export to Lebanon and Syria is taking place as part of an agreement reached between the energy ministers of Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon in February.

Power transfer to Lebanon and Syria will be carried out in two phases; 50 megawatts in the first phase and 200 megawatts in the second phase, Farzam added.
