Iran to donate tourism carpet to UNESCO

The carpet will be first unveiled during a ceremony at Tehran’s Milad Tower and then donated to UNESCO Tehran Cluster Office on June 25, 2012.

The ‘Each Tourist, a Knot’ project was launched in 2010 and finished two years later after 2,233,000 tourists contributed to it by tying knots.

Planned by Iran’s Setareh Kavir Group, the project aimed to commemorate the year 2010, which was named by the UN cultural body as the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures.

The first knots were tied at the Dowlatabad Garden in the southern Iranian city of Yazd on March 21, 2010 and the carpet was completed on April 4, 2012.

The 120 x 210 carpet is composed of 2,233,000 knots, tied by Iranian and international tourists, Mehr News Agency reported.

The project was supported by the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, the Yazd Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Department, and Yazd Office of Culture and Islamic Guidance.
