Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Ben Mizer has announced a new and complex way of tackling the “tide of unlawful dietary supplements” available and sold within the US.

The problem with the supplement industry is tantamount to snake oil.

According to a study from April, synthetic speed was detected in different supplement brands and a study published last year showed that “2/3rds of supplements previously recalled by the FDA were still tainted with prescription drugs.”

Findings from a study published last month determined that 23,000 emergency visits annually can be attributed to the consumption of dietary supplements. The group most affected by this are adults ages 20 to 34; and they suffer from cardiovascular problems 28% of the time.

Andrew Geller, lead author of the study funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said: “Two other big problems are children ingesting supplements purchased by an adult, or older people choking on pills. Nearly three-fourths (71.8 percent) of the ER visits were related to the use of weight loss or energy-boosting supplements.”

Using data taken from 63 emergency rooms, it was determined that 2,154 patients were hospitalized because of complications brought on by dietary supplements.

Mizer’s announcement includes several bureaucracies such as the Federal Trade Commission, the FDA, the U.S. Postal Services, the Department of Defense, and the Anti-Doping Agency.

The office of the attorney general will focus on civil and criminal cases against supplement manufacturers who knowingly sell sub-par products. For example, USP Labs, the makers of Jack3d and OxyElitePro for exercise and weightloss, are made with ingredients from China that are potentially dangerous.

The FTC is going after companies with 20 warning letters, 11 active cases and 2 settlements outside of court.

USP Labs is accused of falsifying documents and doctoring packaging in order to sell their products in the US. The result of this action caused a portion of their customers needing liver transplants after consuming the product.

The corporation refused to stop selling their supplements after the FDA instructed them to do so.

In the fight to expose snake oil in the supplement industry, Attorney General for Oregon Ellen Rosenblum filed suit against GNC, alleging that the corporation “knowingly sold products spiked with two synthetic drugs”; one of them being picamilon, a drug created in Russia to treat migraines and brain damage.

Reilly Dolan, acting deputy director of the FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection (BCP), acknowledged that “some supplements that make up the $40 billion industry do work, others are nothing more than 21st century snake oil.”

In 2014, Cambridge Health Alliance analyzed 27 products marketed as dietary supplements for weight loss, sexual enhancement and sports performance enhancement and found that 2/3rds contained banned ingredients.”
