John Collier’s Dramatic and Dreamy Paintings

by Marion Collier (nÈe Huxley)

John Maler Collier (1850 – 1934) was a leading British artist and an author. He was part of the Pre-Raphaelite movement of painters and also one of the most favored portrait painters of his day. His formal training came from the Munich Academy at the age of 25.

Collier came from a successful and talented family. His grandfather was a member of Parliament, like his father, who was also Attorney General and a judge of the Privy Council. His father became the first Lord Monkswell and his elder brother was the second, also serving as Under-Secretary of State for War and Chairman of the London County Council. His son, Sir Laurence Collier, would become the British Ambassador to Norway. Both of John’s marriages were to daughters of Thomas Henry Huxley, due to the untimely death of Marion..

Collier had a wide variety of subjects, covering religious, mythological, historic, and everyday themes in his work. His paintings can still be seen displayed prominently in public collections, primarily in Britain.
