Lebanon’s political and security fears resurface

Lebanese flagFears about the rising political and security turmoil in Lebanon have been renewed following last night’s series of suicide bombings near Prophet Othman in the Bekaa Valley and the continuing violent clashes in the city of Tripoli, including attacks against the Lebanese Army.

Senior government sources revealed that Lebanese security agencies have received disturbing information about renewed attempts to escalate the tensions in Lebanon to coincide with the worsening situation in Syria. The sources added that over the past two days certain parties have conducted a series of attacks against the Lebanese army in Tripoli.

A security source explained that gunmen have assassinated a senior army leader and injured five soldiers in Tripoli following the issuance of fatwas on Saturday permitting those who support the opposition forces in Syria to murder Lebanese soldiers and army generals.

The sources said that the Lebanese media have initiated a series of stringent measures to help control the security situation and address the threats.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese government, led by Prime Minister Tammam Salam, is preparing for the parliament’s vote of confidence on Wednesday and Thursday regarding the new cabinet policy statement, which has generated heated discussions in the political arena.

The right-wing Christian Phalange Party has threatened that three of its ministers will resign from the unity government if the controversial security clause in the cabinet’s policy statement guaranteeing the right of all Lebanese citizens to resist against Israeli occupation is not amended. The Lebanese Forces, another right-wing Christian party that has boycotted the current cabinet, also announced that it plans to vote against the statement.

In related news, the Lebanese president will invite the leaders of the main parties in Lebanon to meet again this week to resume the national dialogue, which has been stalled for nearly a month, in the hopes of placing the Lebanese political parties back on track to meeting their responsibilities towards the rising political and security turmoil.
