Libya militia training bid angers Turkey

Controversy arose when Libya added the word ‘militia’ to the agreement, according to which Turkey should train Libyan police forces.

Deputy Chairman of Turkey’s Republican People’s Party Faruk Logoglu said training militia forces in another country is against international agreements and violates human rights.

Another Turkish parliamentarian, Sinan Oghan from the Nationalist Movement Party, has also said that training militia forces of a foreign country can put Turkey in trouble.

In 2011, Head of Libya’s National Transitional Council Mustafa Abdul Jalil and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan reached an agreement allowing Turkey to train Libyan army personnel during the transitional period.

Jalil said that the move is part of a program “to develop a regular army.”
