‘London Olympics repels tourists’

After several warnings from businesses that transport chaos caused by the London Olympics have deterred locals and tourists, Hunt has admitted that he is now expecting “just under 750,000 additional visitors” during the Olympics.

West End retailers, theatres, and restaurants have already warned that the London Olympic Games have left the British capital a “ghost town”.

“There are [far] fewer European tour groups, probably accentuated by the Euro crisis. Some tourist groups stay away from an Olympic host city because the logistics are so much harder. On the other hand we get a lot of new visitors who come to spend money in different ways”, said Hunt.

This comes as official figures have revealed that more than one in 10 Olympic seats a day has been left empty.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has already said that the London Olympics would generate £13 billion for the British economy.

However, Hunt said it was very difficult to predict what would be the economic gains of the Olympics for Britain “because the upheaval is so huge”.
