The detained alleged perpetrator Ahmed Ashraf, is a self-declared supporter of the embattled Maldive Vice President Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor  . Ashraf is more commonly known under his social media nom de guerre Shumba Gong.

Shortly before his arrest in Sri Lanka, Ahmed Ashraf alias Shumba Gong tweeted “Some ppl smashed my doors trying to come in. May Allah protect us all”. His tweeted prayer to Allah did, however, not protect him from arrest by Sri Lankan police authorities. Police confirmed the arrest late Sunday. It is at this time uncertain whether or not Sri Lankan authorities will deport Ahmed Ashraf to the Maldives.

Maldivian authorities, also on Sunday, warned that an international manhunt would be launched unless the eight suspects would not return to the Maldives on their own volition. Home Minister Umar Naseer who head the national enquiry commission constituted by the president to investigate the blast stressed that Maldivian authorities were aware that the eight suspects were in neighboring countries, including Thailand and Sri Lanka.

Besides Ahmed Ashraf, the eight suspects include Mohamed Allam Latheef, Mohamed Hussein, Mohamed Visham, Mohamed Aseel Ahmed, Hussein Sinan and Ahmed Ishfah Ali. Maldivian Vice President Adheeb was arrested last week for being an alleged co-conspirator to the blast on the presidential boat in September.

The blast occurred on September 28, 2015, when President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim were travelling to Male from the airport. On that day, the couple had returned from their visit to Saudi Arabia to participate in the annual hajj pilgrimage.
