‘Mubarak verdict strengthens awakening’

“Pressures exerted on the Egyptian judiciary by enemies of this country’s revolution has made [the court] hand down such an unfair verdict on Hosni Mubarak,” Seyed Mehdi Hashemi noted on Sunday.

He added that while even the execution is not enough punishment for Egypt’s former dictator, he has been handed down life sentence.

The Iranian lawmaker stated that during his long presidential term, Mubarak paid no attention to his country’s national interests and only served foreigners and did not even care for humane or religious issues.

“The people of Egypt should know that their revolution has not achieved its final goal yet and they should continue to support and protect their revolution…until they achieve their final goal,” Hashemi said.

In a final court hearing in Cairo on Saturday, the ex-dictator as well as former Interior Minister Habib al-Adli were sentenced to life imprisonment for the killing of around 900 protesters during the country’s popular uprising.

Mubarak also faced separate charges of corruption along with his sons Alaa and Gamal, but the charges were dropped.

The court also dropped charges against six other security officials, who were brought to trial for the killing of protesters.

The verdict sparked fierce clashes between the families of the victims and security officials inside the court while angry spectators called the court illegitimate and demanded that Mubarak be executed.
