NATO getting Central Asian exit route

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Monday that Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan had agreed to allow the reverse transport of alliance equipment, The Associated Press reported.

NATO already also has an agreement with Russia, so the new deals will permit the alliance to send tens of thousands of vehicles, containers, and other items to Europe later this year.

Since October 2001, Pakistan has been the main supply route for US-led forces occupying Afghanistan.

But Islamabad closed the border crossings used to transfer NATO supplies to Afghanistan in November 2011 after 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed in US-led airstrikes on two checkpoints on the Afghan border.

Pakistan has asked the United States to apologize for the attack but Washington has refused.

Before the route was cut, supplies would arrive by sea in Karachi, from where they would travel in long, exposed convoys through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in northwest Pakistan.
