New law will close door for Mokbel

Tony Mokbel’s attempt to change his plea after admitting to drugs charges will be thwarted by the Victorian government pushing through retrospective legislation to fix up dodgy police affidavits.

Both Fairfax and News Ltd papers report that the legislation will also salvage thousands of prosecutions that were in danger of collapsing because police routinely failed to swear out affidavits correctly.

There were more than 6000 prosecutions under threat, which included offences for homicide, drug trafficking, sex crimes, serious assaults and armed robbery.

News Ltd said more than 9000 Victoria Police officers had confessed to illegally preparing affidavits used to get search warrants and other warrants going back at least 15 years.

The changes will apply to affidavits sworn before November 12 last year.
