Newark mayor Cory Booker saves neighbour from burning building

The mayor suffered second degree burns to his hand and smoke inhalation as he
pulled his unnamed neighbour, a mother-of-one, to safety. She is in hospital
in a stable condition with second-degree burns to her back and neck.

He denied that he was a hero for rushing into the burning building.

“There are people who do this every day,” he said. “I’m a
neighbour that did what most neighbours would do, which is to jump into
action to save a friend.

“I think I did what most people would do to help their neighbours. It was
a really frightening experience for me. I didn’t think we were going to get
out of there.”

Detective Alex Rodriguez, who had tried to stop the Mayor running into the
building by pulling on his belt, told CBS News. “Without thinking
twice, he ran into the flames and rescued this young lady.”

The exact cause of the blaze has yet to be determined, but officials said that
the fire may have been started by a cooking accident.

Mr Booker was first elected as the Mayor of Newark in 2006, at the age of 34.
He has been named as a possible future governor of New Jersey and tipped as
America’s second black president. In February, he
gave the opening oration at singer Whitney Houston’s funeral in Newark
,
her home town.

Last month, he
accompanied David Cameron on a tour of downtown Newark
, where they
discussed the role of mayors in urban regeneration.
