Norwegians plan strike over wages

Approximately 17,000 Norwegian private sector workers plan to go on strike on Monday, affecting oil service firms, Oslo’s Gardermoen Airport and important manufacturers, said LO and YS unions on Wednesday.

The unions further said that more than 170,000 workers could join the strike, potentially shutting vital industries.

The unions did not specify their demands but said they want to narrow the gap between the lowest paid workers and the top earners amid the country’s booming oil revenues and stable state finances.

Public and private sector employees have gone on several strikes since last year, with ongoing negotiations breaking down late last month as both sides turned to a mediator, setting Sunday as the deadline for a deal.

Norwegian workers make about 60 percent more than the European average, earning about USD 6,800 a month in 2012.

The economy also grew by 3.5 percent last year amid the eurozone sinking back into recession.

On February 22, the European Commission said the eurozone would witness another year of recession in 2013.

The winter economic forecast of the EU had also said that the jobless rate in the euro area would hit 12.2 percent for 2013.

Europe plunged into financial crisis in early 2008. The worsening debt crisis has forced the EU governments to adopt harsh austerity measures and tough economic reforms.
