Obama hints Scots should ditch indep.

US President Barack Obama has intervened in the issue of Scottish independence, saying America has a “deep interest” in seeing Scotland remain part of the United Kingdom.

“We obviously have a deep interest in making sure that one of the closest allies that we will ever have remains a strong, robust, united and effective partner,” Obama said during a joint press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron following a G7 summit on Thursday.

However, Obama went on to add: “But ultimately these are decisions that are to be made by the folks there.”

The US president said the UK works “pretty well” as a “united” nation.

Obama’s comments were quickly criticized by Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, who said Scotland only wanted the same independence the US got more than 200 years ago.

Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland, Salmond said, “America had to fight for its independence. We are very fortunate in Scotland that we have a democratic, agreed, consented process by which we can vote for our independence.”

“So in summary, I suppose my message to President Obama is: Yes we can.”

Obama’s comments on Scotland’s independence also sparked criticism from Scottish nationalists. Pete Wishart, a Scottish National Party (SNP) Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) said Scottish voters do not care what Obama thinks.

Other prominent Nationalist figures also argued that the US wants to keep the UK as its “lapdog.”

Scotland will have its independence day on March 24, 2016 if Scottish people vote to break away from the UK in a referendum on September 18, 2014 after more than 300 years of political union.
