Irene

The eye of hurricane Irene remains near the Bahamas, but already President Barack Obama has signed an emergency disaster declaration for North Carolina.

The North Carolina’s Outer Banks are expected to take the brunt of the storm at its strongest point on Saturday — with latest predictions placing the center of the storm passing over New York City as a Category 1 hurricane late Sunday.

The declaration authorizes the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist in evacuation and response as it deems necessary.

“Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. Emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance, will be provided at 75 percent federal funding.”

The New York City transit system is expected to shut down bus, train and subway service once winds reach 39 miles per hour — which may occur as soon as Saturday. Additionally, bridges across the tri-state New York area may be closed if high winds make them too dangerous to pass.

If the storm continues on its present track, Obama will likely issue similar preemptive declarations in the next day or two.

  1. Hurricanes here typically go out to sea.

    • but this one is projected to come into Maryland and new york a class 2.

  2. Of course, nothing gives Soetoro more pleasure than preparing America for his precious emergencies.

  3. wait until you see the looting that stems from hurricane irene….this should be entertaining. Hope everyone keeps their guns dry…

    • You mean, powder dry.

  4. I was raised in New Jersey and when I was a young boy our state was hit by back to back hurricains, I think it was 1952. More than sixty boy scouts and their leaders were camping on an island in the Deleware Water Basin and were killed by the storms. My dad took me to the Washington’s Crossing bridge to look at the river, which was at the level of the bridge at least fifty feet above normal. Houses were floating down the river and hitting the bridge. To this day if you drive through the Deleware Water Basin on the Pennsylvania side you can see the high water marks at least thirty feet above the road and two hundred feet above the river. I’m 64 years old now and I’ll never forget the sound of the wind outside our house when those hurricains hit.

We didn’t have a FEMA back then, nor did we need one. People on both sides of the river came together and worked their asses off to clean up the mess and get back to normal. It appears we’ve become a nation of wimps who can’t wipe our own asses without assistance from the federal government. HOW PATHETIC WE HAVE BECOME!

  5. I’m sure FEMA is desperate to ” help “

  6. Seems to me the government is doing what they’re typically known to do. And with FEMA under Janet Napolitano and DHS it seems they’ll use any event to rachet up the regional (NYC/NJ) police state.

  7. I am in NC and these storms are gonna be a direct hit to us. The problem is we are pretty good and experienced at these storms. New York and other are just not accostomed to these storms. And we know they dont evacuate unless it is gonna be a direct hit. I am inland a little so we will get massive wind. I think Norfolk will be screwed most. They are only 1-2 ft above sea level. As the storm hits land it will lose power. I am ready to camp out inside for about a week. lol. But keep in your prayers the ones that cant afford to leave or those that cant afford to be prepared for this impact.

    • The folks on the Outter Banks are old hands at storms know just what to do.
It will be the inland cityslickers who will be the crybabys when the lights go out.
      Bless all of you anyways!

  8. ANOTHER KATRINA, COUGH, COUGH.

THE FIRST KATRINA CAME FOR THE CITY WITH A NEW IN IT’S NAME, THIS KATRINA WILL COME TO ANOTHER CITY WITH A NEW IN IT’S NAME.

IF YOU LIVE IN THE DELMARVA PENNINSULA= ESPECIALLY MARYLAND/DC CONSIDER A LAST MINUTE VACATION OUT WEST- TODAY- LIKE PRONTO- LIKE NOW DAMM IT GO!!!

THIS IS ACCORDING TO OUR CHRISTIAN PROPHETS.

    • DELMARVA PENNISULA WILL BE THE WORST HIT. IN FACT THE THE AREA FROM NORTH CAROLINA TO BOSTON= BILLIONS IN LOSSES.

MARYLAND WILL BE THE HARDEST HIT.

      • THE HURRICANE WILL START TO MOVE UP NORTH UNEXPECTEDLY VERY SOON- LIKE IN HOURS FROM NOW.

NEW YORK AND NEW ENGLAND WILL HAVE MANY DELAYS AND DISRUPTIONS.

      • GOD IS GOING TO GIVE OBAMA A WAKE UP CALL WITH THIS STORM- WILL HE HEAD THE MESSAGE.

THE QUAKE WAS THE FIRST, THE HURRICANE IS THE SECOND, THE NEXT IS THE EOCNOM, AND THE NEXT IF HE DOESNT LISTEN WILL BE UNCONTROLLABLE RIOTS.

        • (ECONOMY)

        • Why do yall blame everything on God?? Morons.

  9. We got hit by Rita in 2005 and Ike in 2008. I didn’t stay around for either one. I know better. These were two of the worst ever recorded in our area along the Gulf Coast. I wonder if the Golfer in Chief makes sure those PGA Courses get the storm funding to repair after the storm so he can go back to his business as usual?

  10. Is that fruitcake still swilling appletinis at Martha’s Vinyard?

  11. If NYC gets hit by direct cat 1, this could be Superfome X 10! I hoe you all have food and water storage, not to mention means to protect itself.

    • Never thought about that they are gonna be out looting and robbing people. Dont worry they cant have guns in NY. Sucks for them.

  12. Maybe the Prankster in Chief will also issue a preemptive emergency shut down of telecommunications to keep us safe. The exception, of course, will be the public safety messages from FEMA that will come through unless the batteries are removed.

  13. I dont know about anyone else…but ever since Katrina.. mentioning FEMA , thems are fighting words.. Insult and Injury on top of bad luck
