Usually considered the dominion of so-called conspiracy theorists, the issue of a post-911 social order imposed on the UK, through authoritarian security measures to be rolled out using the Olympics 2012 as cover, is one that receives little coverage either in the corporate-media, or its entirely subordinate UK blogosphere.

However, a recent article written by a University of Newcastle professor demonstrates the existence of academic acknowledgement and recognition of the looming impact on British society of an Olympics event that is being staged in times of growing moneyed-corporatist influence despite general austerity, and in a context of a booming “homeland security” sector of the west’s military industrial complex.

The full swathe of security measures intended for the London 2012 Olympic Games are still under wraps for so-called operational reasons. Be that as it may, enough is known to understand them to be well beyond what is required in the context of any threat that any real terrorist could muster:

The London Olympics will host the biggest mobilisation of military and security forces seen in the UK since the second world war. More troops – around 13,500 – will be deployed than are currently at war in Afghanistan. The growing security force is being estimated at anything between 24,000 and 49,000 in total. Such is the secrecy that no one seems to know for sure.

During the Games an aircraft carrier will dock on the Thames. Surface-to-air missile systems will scan the skies. Unmanned drones, thankfully without lethal missiles, will loiter above the gleaming stadiums and opening and closing ceremonies. RAF Typhoon Eurofighters will fly from RAF Northolt. A thousand armed US diplomatic and FBI agents and 55 dog teams will patrol an Olympic zone partitioned off from the wider city by an 11-mile, £80m, 5,000-volt electric fence.

On top of this, during the Olympics Britons should expect to encounter police checkpoints (which may also be manned by military personnel). The proposal made in a recent Guardian article by Stephen Graham, a professor of cities and society, is that this bloated security is tantamount to overt militarised defence zones, that previously belonged in airports and on international borders, being extended into the hinterland of the country. Moreover, he suggests that the legacy of the Olympics could be a permanent social order where the British elite, who feel endangered by “vague non-state or civilian threats that lurk within their own cities and the infrastructures that connect them,” bring into existence fortified lifestyles for themselves. The defences are arranged against a discontent people who feel that they are being misruled, for instance, by a governing class that imposes swingeing austerity policy.
