The Chief Justice is an outspoken and controversial figure in Pakistan.
In 2008, he became the figurehead of the lawyers’ movement which eventually
brought an end to the rule of Pervez Musharraf.
Today, however, he has clashed frequently with the government and is accused
of using the courts for party politics. In April he found Yousuf Raza
Gilani, the Prime Minister, in contempt of court for failing to re-open
corruption proceedings against the country’s President.
The International Commission of Jurists recently criticised his apparently
arbitrary initiation of “suo moto” proceedings based on articles
he had read in Pakistani
newspapers, often intervening in cases where the government had failed to
act.
