Popular colas contain cancerous agent

“Coke and Pepsi, with the acquiescence of the FDA, are needlessly exposing millions of Americans to a chemical that causes cancer,” said executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) Michael F. Jacobson.

Lab studies commissioned by CSPI examined samples of products including Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc.’s Dr Pepper and Diet Dr Pepper and Whole Foods 365 Cola from Washington-area stores.

According to the report, the chemical called 4-methylimidazole or 4-MIical 4-methylimidazole is part of the caramel coloring used in many of soda beverages.

The caramel-coloring substance is not made of natural caramel but produced via a chemical process which involves ammonia.

The group petitioned the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in February to ban the ammonia-sulfite coloring, which is found in most soda drinks.

FDA, however, says it has no enough evidence confirming that 4-MI is dangerous for human as well.

Further investigations are needed to show clearly that the detected doses of the chemical in fizzy drinks are not safe for human, noted FDA officials.

The advocacy group believes that the amount of 4-MI in many soft drinks are high enough to require a warning notice. It estimated that the chemical in Coke and Pepsi products is causing about 15,000 cancers only in the US.
