After cycling 63 miles through the night for charity, Princess Eugenie must have been keen for a lie-down.

But her mother was not going to let her get away without a hug.

Beaming with pride, the Duchess of York embraced her exhausted daughter at the end of her seven-hour ride.

And at the risk of embarrassing her daughter, the 52-year-old waited at the finish line with a collection of congratulatory helium balloons, commonly used at children’s birthday parties.

The 22-year-old princess was one of around 3,000 riders who cycled around London to raise money for various charities.

She finished the route at 7.50am at
Alexandra Palace this morning, raising more than £9,000 for her new
patronage, the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, and for Marylebone
Cricket Club.

This included a donation of £500 from her mother Sarah.

Prince Andrew’s office, presumably in better financial shape than the cash-strapped Duchess, offered a mere £50.

An accommodation unit at the hospital – which launched a £15million appeal – will be named Princess Eugenie House.

Other riders included TV presenter Ben Fogle, who was supporting the World Wildlife Fund, and Downton Abbey actor Jim Carter, who was also raising money for the MCC.

The charity appeal bears special
significance for the princess because she underwent surgery at the
hospital when she was 12 to correct her scoliosis.

She said her experience of her
procedure, during which two 12-inch rods were placed in her back, has
helped her relate to other patients with the same condition.

‘I’ve got two 12-inch rods and eight
screws going up my back keeping me straight and they fuse together with
my spine so now I can’t live without them,’ she told Sky News.

When asked about meeting other
patients, she said: ‘One girl lit up when she saw me. I showed her my
scar and pulled my top down. She said: “Oh my God, look at you, you’re
standing”.

‘She was lying down at that point, I
think. For me to be living proof for them gives them much more
confidence and hope that it’s OK and we can get through this.’

And she admitted her condition also provides lighter moments.

‘It is sometimes quite fun because my
friends can put magnets on my back and they kind of hang off,’ she said.
‘It’s really weird.’

Yesterday, in the first interview by a
royal since the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the princess said her
grandmother the Queen would have found the final two days of the event
‘quite testing’ without Prince Philip by her side.

The Duke of Edinburgh was taken ill last Sunday with a bladder infection but returned home yesterday to celebrate his 91st birthday.

‘They are the most incredibly supportive couple to each other. Grandpa was unfortunately taken ill and for granny to come and do that alone was probably quite testing and I think he is her rock, really, and she is his,’ Eugenie told Sky News.

well done, so proud of our young royals!

I think she is quite lovely but sadly she is despised by the British public because she is lumped together with the rest of her unappealing and freeloading family.

Well done! That’s a brilliant thing to do.

Like her father, mother and sister, she is still a free-loading, unnecessary drain on the tax payer. So what, she has cycled a bit and raised some money, but, on balance, the country is getting a very poor deal.

But she’s raised awareness of an extremely important charity and brought it coverage that it otherwise would not have received! People who need treatment from The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital ARE getting a good deal!

Those balloons are also used at grown ups birthday parties, or any number of celebrations…pointless meanness! Well done Eugenie!

I am no supporter of royalty but anyone criticising Eugenie should get on a bike and pedal from central London to Brighton and then ten miles out into the sea and they will have done 63 miles. If you can’t do it yourself don’t criticise.

Poor thing, looks like Andrew in a wig!

I’m not noted as an ar**e kissing royal toady but I don’t understand the snide comment about her looks. She looks good in all these pictures, lovely complexion and beautiful eyes. On yer bikes!

She’s a sexy princess, with great curves up top a lovely smile. I’m a big fan.

Good for her! And her mum looks incredibly proud!
