Prostate cancer treatment ‘encouraging’

Unlike traditional treatments such as surgery and radiation therapy, the new technique called high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can target powerful sound waves to destruct the cancerous area without affecting intact prostate tissues.

The technology enables doctors to treat cancer without removing or affecting the whole gland which usually leads to impotence and leakage of urine or feces, wrote researchers in The Lancet Oncology.

Researchers of University College London who tested the therapy on 41 men with prostate cancer also described the outcomes as “perfect’” after a year of follow up.

About 95 percent of participants were cancer-free after a year while none of them reported urine incontinence. Only one in 10 suffered sexual function problems.

“When you look at the current standard of care, there’s a 1-in-3, or 1-in-2 chance of having the perfect outcome,” said study’s lead author Dr. Hashim Ahmed. “In this study, after 12 months, it’s a 9-in-10 chance.”

“Our results are very encouraging. We’re optimistic that men diagnosed with prostate cancer may soon be able to undergo a day case surgical procedure, which can be safely repeated once or twice, to treat their condition with very few side-effects. That could mean a significant improvement in their quality of life,” Dr. Ahmed added.

“This study provides the proof-of-concept we need to develop a much larger trial to look at whether focal therapy is as effective as the current standard treatment in protecting the health of the men treated for prostate cancer in the medium and long term.”
