Protesters occupy Olympic artist’s home

Members of the “Bread and Circuses” group entered the expensive five-storey building in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, located in central London, yesterday on June 22 for a celebration of art and music in order to protest at corporate involvement in art.

The group’s chief complained that the London Olympic Games are “being used by the [British] government and corporations to take our minds off austerity measures, the global economic crisis and the commodification of everything, even art.”

The 115-metre tall Olympic Park’s landmark red tower, which cost £22.7m to built, dominates the skyline, towering above a previously rundown part of east London.

“The ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower and the staging of the Olympics are attempts to create public approval through diversion and distraction, whilst hiding the corporate influence on every aspect on our lives – even sports and the arts, not to mention democracy ,” the group said in a statement.

Moreover, the anti-capitalist protestors said that they wanted to use “all this empty space” left derelict by Kapoor, adding, “How can you own a place like this and not even use it when there are people sleeping in the streets?”
