A nuclear power plant that was shut down after an earthquake struck central Virginia Tuesday had seismographs removed in 1990s due to budget cuts.

U.S. nuclear officials said that the North Anna Power Station, which has two nuclear reactors, had lost offsite power and was using diesel generators to maintain cooling operations after an 5.9 earthquake hit the region.

The North Anna plant, which was near the epicenter of Tuesday’s quake, is reportedly located on a fault line.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission rates the plant as theseventh most likely to receive core damage from a quake. But they say the chances of that are only 1 in 22,727.

  1. and the odds on a massive quake and tsunami in japan were?
they built ON a fault line?
    ooh not smart!

  2. hang on ..budget cuts?
they have expensive equipment already installed, with a serious reason to be there, and minimal effort to keep it going..and its already paid for( or should be)
so how? is shutting the pc etc down saving much at all?

  3. The VA earthquake was not in Mineral, VA. Lat: 37.931 Long. -77.935 Epicenter was in Cuckoo, VA. In fact, it is off of State Route 677/Goodwin Store Road.

At about 9PM last night I was monitoring the USGS site, and I saw that this AM the information was REMOVED from the USGS USA Earthquake List: a 4.2 in VA and a 2.8 in Loklahoma. I had to search the site this AM and found it on the “Shake” map and on the extended area map. If you go for the basic view map you will not get the info.

Since 8/22 11 in Colorado, 5 in VA, and 2 in Oklahoma. If these were on different continents, we would naturally not be concerned; however, they are not. We were in Atlantic City when the 2Pm 5.9 hit in VA. The concrete floor surrounding the indoor pool swayed (Glass enclosed area) and it felt as if something hit the building (37+ stories). People were evacuating the building and the hotel made announcements that there wasn’t any emergency. We left ASAP. East Coast buildings are not reinforced to meet earthquake standards, as are those on the West Coast.

The news is also not telling the truth…as usual…a 5.9 is NOT a common occurence on the West Coast of the USA. This is not anything ordinary. The fact that these earthquakes are across the USA Va-to-Oklahoma-to- Colorado is telling us that there is a real problem.

Remember this: It happened at 2PM. That’s the same time as the future 11/9 FEMA Emergency Alert Test announcement. Did anyone have anything in their cars to keep them with water and food for an emergency. I doubt it! We need to be vigilent and prepared. These earthquakes are happening and the epicenter is in Cuckoo NOT Mineral Virginia. In fact, it is in someone’s backyard near a pond and small stream…in the middle of nothing.
