RAF Afghan drones flown from UK soil

The MoD confirmed on Thursday, April 25 that its new aircraft, known as XIII Squadron, started flying missions over Afghanistan this week from RAF Waddington base in Lincolnshire.

According to the reports, the hi-tech Reaper aircraft carries 500lb (230 kg) bombs and Hellfire missiles.

RAF pilots previously controlled armed drones over Afghanistan from the USA base in Nevada.

British anti-drone activists are planned to assemble at Lincoln rail station on April 27 and then march to the Waddington base, located in east of England.

Vice-chair of the Stop the War Coalition Chris Nineham said in a statement, “Drones are being used to continue the deeply unpopular War on Terror, with no public scrutiny”.

“They’re using them to fight wars behind our backs. These remote-controlled killing machines should be banned,” he added.

Britain has spent more than £2 billion over the last five years, developing its unethical assassination drones, according to British media reports.

In October last year, the UK military announced plans to double the number of its assassination drone fleet in Afghanistan by deploying new US-made Reaper drones to the Asian country.

The deployment of assassination drones by the US and its allies has led to deaths of at least hundreds of innocent civilians, including many women and children, in the Middle East.
