Report: OAS summit furthers US isolation

“The United States emerged from the [sixth OAS] summit in Colombia increasingly isolated… The rare show of unity highlights the steady decline of Washington’s influence in a region that has become less dependent on US trade and investment thanks to economic growth rates that are the envy of the developed world and new opportunities with China,” Reuters reported on Monday.

The report also described Latin America as “a region that is no longer content with being the backyard of the United States.”

On Monday, Bolivian President Evo Morales said that Latin American countries are in rebellion against the US after years of domination by their northern neighbor.

“It seems the United States still wants to isolate us from the world, it thinks it can still manipulate Latin America, but that’s ending… What I think is that this is a rebellion of Latin American countries against the US,” he noted on the last day of the summit in Cartagena, northern Colombian.

The two-day summit, which ended on April 15, had gathered leaders and representatives of member countries of the Western Hemisphere except Cuba as the US insists that Havana implement democratic reforms before returning to the hemispheric family.

However, Washington’s policy towards Cuba is seen by other members as a relic of the Cold War.
