The Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee (HSGA) has concluded and published a 350-page report detailing over-prescription of painkillers by doctors at the Wisconsin VA hospital.

Included in this report is the Inspector General who failed to consider evidence of this, as the agency began their investigation in 2011 into complaints that opiates were being prescribed at an exorbitant rate to veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

For three years this investigation neglected to consider two things: “whether the opiates were being prescribed in dangerous combinations with other drugs, nor whether employees felt threatened with retaliation if they raised concerns.”

The little data collected was passed on to John Daigh, assistant inspector general of healthcare inspections at the OIG. Daigh decided not to let this information become public and told senators that the report itself contained “salacious allegations” that he could not “support”; therefore he buried the report.

Senator Ron Johnson, chair of the HSGA committee, held a meeting to discuss “allegations into prescription narcotic handling and dispensing, and the deaths related to care at the Tomah VA center.”
Johnson is responsible for the release of this report. He explained : “It’s going to describe the findings of the sixteen-month investigation by my Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee staff on exactly how the problems that were occurring within Tomah, that literally should have been known by the public for more than a decade.”

This report names Tomah VA director Mario DeSanctis, chief of staff David Houlihan, and a nurse practitioner as part of the opiate problem. In fact, Houlihan was known as “Candy Man” because of the massive amounts of opiates he prescribed to veterans.
