Russia urges restraint over Turkish jet

The ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that it is important that the incident be not viewed as a provocation or an intentional action.

“The political propaganda is especially dangerous when there are efforts underway to mobilize all influential outside players” in arranging a lasting peace process, the statement said.

On Friday, a Turkish F4 Phantom was shot down by Syria, which announced that the Turkish warplane violated its airspace.

Moscow released the warning after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened earlier on Tuesday that Ankara would retaliate against Damascus over the incident.

Erdogan said that he had given orders to the armed forces to react to any threat approaching Turkish borders from Syria.

“Our rational response should not be perceived as weakness, our mild manners do not mean we are a tame lamb,” he said.

Russia also urged Turkey and Syria to practice “restraint and constructive cooperation” to prevent “such tragic events from happening again.

NATO has condemned Syria’s downing of the Turkish jet as ‘unacceptable’ and promised support for Ankara.

Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi on Monday warned NATO against forging any anti-Syria conspiracy on the downing of the Turkish fighter jet.
