nsnbc : Russia will deliver technology and helicopters to for the French-built Mistral warship that Egypt bought after France failed to deliver the two vessels to Russia due to sanctions.

Mistral_Navy_Russia_France_NEOThe Russian RIA Novosti news agency quotes the Chief of Staff of the Russian Presidency, Sergey Ivanov, as saying that the Russian – Egyptian deal will make the two Mistral vessels warships in the true sense of the word.

On Saturday, October 10, Egypt and France signed a contract about the delivery of the two Mistral warships. The ceremony at Egypt’s Presidential Palace was attended by Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi and French Prime Minister Manuel Valls.

Valls chaired a high-profiled delegation including Minister of Defense Jean-Yves Le Drian and number of French representatives in trade and industrial fields, reported The Cairo Post.

The warships were originally produced for Russia. Paris, however, canceled the contract over sanctions imposed on Russia over the situation in Ukraine and Crimea’s accession into the Russian Federation after a referendum was held that showed an overwhelming support for Crimea’s secession from Ukraine.

After long disputes, France refunded 950 million euro ($1 billion) to Moscow. International lawyer Christopher Black analyzed the French – Russian row over the two warships in his article entitled “The Mistral Affair: Breach of Contract or Hostile Act?“.

Russian government spokespersons and government officials have previously made statements to the effect that the two French-built ships were comparable to lame ducks without the planned Russian technology and helicopters. These statements, and the increased western – Russian tensions over the situation in the Middle East put into perspective the words of Kremlin Chief of Staff Sergey Ivanov, that the Russian technology and helicopters would make the two Mistral warships in the true sense of the word.

The two ships will boost Egypt’s capacity to defend its coastlines, the vital northern entrance to the Suez Canal and the Ban Al-Mandeb Strait. Egypt is currently fighting an insurgency in its Northern Sinai province and Egypt is gravely concerned over the risk that the ongoing conflict in Yemen could threaten shipping in the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait.
